CONFESSION AND ASSURANCE
Call to Confession:
People of God, it is with grace we are invited to the table of God’s Son. But in all honesty, we have sinned. We need to ask God to have compassion on us in our weakness, and to enable us in the light of His holy Word to read the secrets of our own hearts and to obediently respond in sincere repentance.
Prayer of Confession:
Lord, we are like sheep, and we get lost. We hunger and look for satisfaction in all the wrong places. We forget the needs of our neighbors and we do not love you above all else. We need forgiveness; we need a holy provision; we need a Savior, so we long for the Bread of Life. Forgive us, and come, fill our lives, Jesus. Amen.
Hymn of Assurance: O LORD, My God, Most Earnestly PH 63:1,2
*Please stand if possible
Assurance of Pardon:
Through this supper Jesus Christ assures us that he will truly nourish and refresh us with his crucified body and shed blood to everlasting life. He promises this in the institution of this supper, saying of the bread, "This is my body"; and of the wine, "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins" (Matt. 26:26ff.). With these words our Lord directs our faith to his perfect sacrifice, once offered on the cross, as the only ground of our salvation. He also assures us that by his death he has taken away our sin, the cause of our eternal death, and has obtained for us the life-giving Spirit. By this Spirit, who dwells in Christ as in the head and in us as his members, he brings us into true communion with himself and makes us partakers of all his riches, of eternal life, righteousness, and glory.
PRAISE AND PRAYER
* Song of Response: Lord Jesus Is Calling to All Who Will Hear PH 536:1-3
(Children may come forward during the last stanza)
Message for Children
Prayer of Thanksgiving and Intercession, concluding with the Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
PREPARATION AND PROCLAMATION
* Hymn of Preparation: Come, You Disconsolate PH 538:1-3
Presentation of Offerings and Passing of Friendship Pads
Offertory Prayer: Curt Overbeek
Offering for Degagé Ministries
Offertory Anthem: If I Take the Wings of Morning Amanda Husberg
If I take the wings of morning and to foreign lands I flee;
If I force the night to hide me, who will then come seeking me?
There, O Love, I know you’ll find me,
There, O Love, I know you’ll be.
With Love’s light you’ll blind the darkness,
With Love’s life you’ll rescue me.
If near Eden’s tree I wander in the place where sin began,
Where the serpent mocked obedience, separating God from man.
If I build an ark to bear me safely to a mountain’s crown,
If the tower I raise to touch you wounds me as it tumbles down:
If fears bid my tongue deny you, if to treachery I yield,
If remorse and bitter sorrow send me to that potter’s field.
Neither death, nor life, nor angels, present things, those yet to be,
Neither height nor depth can ever separate God’s love from me.

WORSHIP TODAY
WELCOME TO CALVIN CHURCH! As we gather for worship this day, we are grateful for the presence of members and guests. If you are a visitor, we hope you feel warmly welcomed and very much a part of this worshiping community as together we lift up praises to our great God and King. We invite everyone to come to the Fellowship Hall for refreshments following the morning service. Our pastors and elders are happy to greet you at the doors as you leave the sanctuary after our services today. Prior to the service this morning you were greeted by Josh and Sara Leo (atrium) and Tim and Lindsay Molenbeek (east). This evening Lynae Posthuma (Fellowship Hall) welcomes you back for our vesper service.
A FRIENDLY NOTE TO OUR GUESTS: Our worship service proceeds unannounced. The Sing! book is located underneath the pew.
CHANCEL BANNER DESCRIPTION: Epiphany.
During the Epiphany season we celebrate the revelation of Christ to the world. Light floods the surface of our Epiphany banner to reflect the light that Christ’s incarnation brought to a world of darkness.
CHILDREN WORSHIP: Visitors’ children are warmly invited to participate in our TLC (The Little Children) and Worship Center programs. Preschool children may go to their TLC room before the morning service (in the lower level). Children (K – 4th grade) will depart the sanctuary steps following the Children’s Message to worship in a space designed especially for them. The TLC and Worship Center rooms are in the lower level—just go downstairs and follow the arrows. Children are picked up by their parents in these worship rooms after the service. If you have any questions, please stop by the information desk or feel free to check out the classrooms before or after the service. All of the youth programs are explained in the red folder on the table near the nurseries.
THE FLOWERS in front of church are placed in loving memory of our son, brother, and uncle, Greg Lanning. The Hedrick and Lanning Families

MEETINGS, ACTIVITIES, AND EVENTS
Today: ADULT EDUCATION: Today we welcome Rev. Dale Cooper to our class. He will speak on "Developing a Personal Devotional Life." He will define just what is meant by a personal devotional life. Is it prayer, meditation? Should we all have personal devotions on a daily basis? Come to hear what Rev. Cooper has to say about it. We have coffee and cookies and we start promptly at 11:30 AM.
Feb. 8: CALVIN FRIENDSHIP BREAKFAST: All 50+ members are invited to enjoy breakfast at Bob Evans Restaurant (28th near I-96) tomorrow morning at 8:30 AM. Simply look for other church members at the restaurant and order breakfast off the menu. This is a scheduled event the second Monday every month. Come whenever you can.
Feb. 14: KIDS HOPE: There will be a prayer meeting for prayer partners and mentors before church next Sunday, Feb. 14 at 9:15 AM in the lounge. If you are interested in being a part of this ministry, but can't commit to every week, there is an opening for a communications person on the leadership team. Contact Jan Wilkins for more information.
Feb. 14: THE FIVE ORGANISTS from Calvin Church will present an organ recital on Sunday evening, February 14, at 7:30 PM. This is the second recital in our series of events celebrating the renovation of our wonderful Aeolian-Skinner organ. It promises to be an entertaining, once-in-a-lifetime event—when else will you ever be able to hear Cornie Huizinga, Bruce Klanderman, Ken Bos, John Tiemstra, and Jim Borst play in the same evening?
ORIENTATION TO CALVIN CHURCH: February 21 and 28, following the morning worship service (11:30-12:15), there will be orientation sessions for anyone who may be just curious about Calvin Church, who has decided to join Calvin Church, or for those who have already joined but would appreciate a bit more orientation.
SOUP MAKERS NEEDED: On Wednesday evening, February 24, we will be having our annual fundraising SOUP and SALAD supper to benefit our 17 youth and adults attending this summer’s service project to Pittsburgh. We are in need of lots of soups! Let Char know if you would like to donate one! We would love to have you come, whether you are bringing a soup or not. Again this year, the soup supper is the same evening as the BLOOD DRIVE at Calvin. Hope to see you then.
